Wine Enthusiast December 2014 top 100 wines of 2014

>>  Ken Wright 2012 Abbott Claim Vineyard Pinot Noir (Yamhill – Carlton District)

From first sniff this exquisite wine grabs you and won’t let go.  Brambly berries, redolent with rich umami notes of spice and pine needle cascade into a wine densely packed with fruit and herbs. It lingers, opens and becomes more and more expressive, with soil generated flavors of forest floor. $65

002>>  Pieropan 2011 La Rocca (Soave Classico)

This stunning single-vineyard selection is one of Italy’s most iconic whites and helped kick off Soave’s renaissance. It delivers pressed yellow flowers, golden apples, citrus, melon and mango alongside mineral and toasted almond notes. Already delicious and well balanced, it will age beautifully and develop more complexity for several years at least. Drink through 2021. Empson USA Ltd . Editors’ Choice . $31

003>> José Maria da Fonseca 2011 José de Sousa (Alentejano)

Fermented partially in old clay amphoras, this is a rich wine that has managed to retain freshness as well. The blend includes Grand Noir, a grape with red juice, as well as Trincadeira and Aragonez. Its density is revealed as it opens up, giving ripe red fruits, solid tannins and a dry core.  Drink from 2017. Palm Bay International . $16

004>>  SonVida 2012 Malbec (Mendoza)

This gorgeous Malbec gets it right. Compact, minerally aromas of blackberry are deep and a bit feral. The palate is juicy and pulses with ribald berry fruit and acidity. Blackberry flavors are beefy, salty and a touch roasted, while the finish is baked, rich and perfectly oaked. Drink through 2020. Kysela Père et Fils.  $23

005>> Domaine Marcel Deiss 2011 Blanc (Alsace)

This wine is made from a mix of 13 diff erent grape varieties in a field blend. It’s a totally terroir driven wine, full of mineral and gritty textures in its youth. Behind this structure is a wild range of flavors spice, apples, pears and apricots— waiting to show through. It needs to age, so drink from 2016. $20

006>> Guido Porro 2010 V. S. Caterina (Barolo)

Leather, blue flower, black berry, tilled soil and allspice scents leap from the glass. The juicy palate delivers crushed black cherry, mint, thyme and sage alongside bracing but polished tannins and fresh acidity. The ripe fruit makes this almost accessible already, but hold for more complexity. Drink after 2020. Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant. $46

007>> Sparkman 2013 Birdie Riesling (Columbia Valley)

Once again the Bacchus Vineyard provided the fruit for this wine, with 20% fermented in neutral oak. It’s lightly spritzy and immensely refreshing. Orange peel, apple, fig and pear fruit flavors are accented by a hint of toasted coconut. There’s also some beeswax in the mix, and the length of the finish is superb. $18

008>> Gruber Röschitz 2012 Hundspoint Grüner Veltliner (Weinviertel)

Grapefruit zest dominates this wine right now, but ripe honeydew melonalso is shining though. As the wine opens up, it also reveals peppery, tangy spice and a refreshingly clean finish. Total Wine & More. $17

009>>  Luis Duarte 2011 Rubrica (Alentejano)

One of Portugal’s top reds, this is a richly endowed wine. Ripe fruits are cut with fresh acidity, dark tannins and signs of judicious wood aging. It shows elegance, style and a rich aft ertaste. Drink this great wine from 2018. Laurel Importers . $40

010>> Iron Horse 2010 Wedding Cuvée (Green Valley)

Pinkish-gold in color, this lovely cuvée is a blend of 74% Pinot Noir and 26% Chardonnay, the winery’s take on a Blanc de Noirs. Fruity in peach, raspberry and blood orange, it is multifaceted and complex, dry and elegant with a long finish that leans herbal, the acidity dialed perfectly
right, gentle on the palate and memorable. $42Wine Enthusiast 2014 December issue top 100 wines

|Sunday| What does a 200 years old wine taste like?

Posted in Wine by Vinum Vine on January 11, 2015

“Despite the fact that it was so amazingly old, there was a freshness to the wine. It wasn’t debilitated in any way. Rather, it had a clear acidity which reinforced the sweetness. Finally, a very clear taste of having been stored in oak casks.”

“Bottles kept at the bottom of the sea are better kept than in the finest wine cellars.”

“Other than a loss of fizziness from the slow loss of air bubbles over the nearly 200 years, the wine tasted exactly the same as it would have back in the 1800s.”
